Network of "Green" Universities of Central Asia – an important step towards sustainable development of universities in the region

The Sustainable Kazakhstan Research Institute (SKRI) at Narxoz University is actively promoting Education for Sustainable Development, as the University is one of the 400 best universities in the world in terms of contributions to the SDGs (Times Higher Education Global University Impact Rankings 2020). In June 2020, the SKRI participated in a number of events dedicated to strategies and investments for the development of green universities, as well as the new forms of partnership in connection with new realities.
Upon to the results of the online seminar on the topic “Green University: Strategies and Investments”, which was organized on June 15, 2020 together with the Green Academy Scientific and Educational Center and international partners, the participants of the event made a number of recommendations for the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan. A special role is forseen to be taken by the initiative to create and develop a network of green universities in Central Asia – an important step towards the sustainable development of universities in the region.
The development of this initiative was also discussed during the first meeting of the draft BRID program and The UN Information Office - SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT PARTNERSHIP PROJECT – on the topic: New forms of partnership for sustainable development during the COVID-19 period. The meeting was aimed at forming steps to create innovative partnerships for sustainable development to address the most pressing issues on the international agenda.
Higher education plays a fundamental role in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by providing students with the knowledge, skills and values ​​needed to contribute to the rapidly growing demand of employers for sustainable development competencies in the workplace and in all areas. Therefore, it is extremely important to develop new forms of partnership for sustainable development both in Kazakhstan and the Central Asian region as a whole.
